The dynamic nature of technology and the speed with which advances occur are enough to leave one’s head spinning. All facets of our lives are impacted by technology but perhaps it is still surprising just how pervasive this level of influence truly is. The most surprising aspect of this is possibly the fact that there is now i more of an impact on the physical world. This is most certainly the case within the gambling industry and there have been some interesting results, given the ubiquitous nature of the internet.

In the United States, comScore Inc (a company that tracks website visits) announced that online gambling sites enjoyed a 28.6 per cent increase in traffic during the fourth quarter of last year. This was perhaps unexpected given the current economic circumstances facing the country at present. As a result, it might be expected that other industry players must have enjoyed the same experience. Perhaps punters were hoping to bet their way out of any financial woes they might be going through. This was certainly the move that some of the world’s leading governments took so it would be conceivable that ordinary citizens might follow the same course of action.

The entire gambling industry has not been as fortunate though and land casinos are feeling the pinch more than anyone. There are two main reasons for this state of affairs, the first is the significant decrease in disposable income available to potential gamblers and secondly, the ability to enjoy gambling in the comfort of one’s own home as made people reluctant to go to casinos. At the very least it involves the logistics of getting there and at the other extreme, it could involve paying for accommodation, both of which are not as attractive as playing at home.

Land based casinos are exposed to additional risk as they have overheads to fulfill and in addition their retail and restaurant activities are also not doing as well as necessary. As every day brings new announcements of job cuts, the gambling industry could very well soon be another story of statistics as things get progressively worse. While the economic crisis is partly to blame for the lower visitor rates to land based casinos, it is more just a sign of the times that people are turning to the online medium for their requirements. This is true of shopping, health, hobbies and now gambling, pretty soon we might not even need to leave the house.
